Explaining neuro-reconnection in a simple way - A new scientific term

Introduction:
With this text, my intension is to coin a new term in Psychology and Neuroscience, the neuro-reconnection, by several ways to work with psychotherapy. The cure and/or benefits obtained from psychotherapies aim an emotional improvement of patients, to have their job, social and personal lives back, increase or decrease of neural circuits, new memories, changes in the dynamic of brain blood flow, etc., phenomena regarding neuroplasticity, changes from micro to macro order in brain, i.e., patient’s effective behavior before their lives. This is the neuro-reconnection with full life by brain changes.

Wordkeys: neuro-reconnection, neuroscience, neuroplasticity, psychology, behavior.

Psychology studies behavior. Whether it might be animals or humans, it tries to understand the reason for each reaction before one or more several situations. Which is the answer? What is it/he going to do? Why did it/he do it? These questions are a very small sample of range of this subject, not considering the other areas it may acts, and only some of them are for humans: social, politics, corporate ones.

When you look at a person, you are analyzing his/her behavior, even you’re not a scientist. Take this example: the person is sitting in a chair in a subway station; it means he/she is waiting for someone or stopped to take a rest.

The scientists are worried with more complex behavior: why is the person so depressed? Why does a boy get too anxious before a girl?

Everything which is visible for humans has a correspondent in brain level from brain working or neural network. It seems simple, but it doesn’t. We have almost 100 billion of neurons; so, we have several networks which produce more complex behavior. Visible behavior. And these networks depend on substances named neurotransmitter to fulfill the lacks between the neurons for a nerve impulse goes through by neurons. This is called synapses and if a person doesn’t have these neurotransmitters, he/she will have troubles.

The neurotransmitter noradrenalin influences on our pleasure, happiness, humor, self-confidence, enthusiasm and alert state. Serotonin interferes in the impulsivity, aggressiveness, in sexual behavior and in pain (1).

So, in simple way, what occurs in micro level reflects on our macro behavior or, simply, behavior. Chemical reactions…

A depressed person is sad, he/she doesn’t have any energy to have a normal life. He/she stays on bed for hours, without hungry, without enthusiasm with life. As doctor Drauzio Varella said “On depression, the ‘existence’ is an unbearable millstone.” (2) There is a “softer” depression, although it’s not worth to explain its details here. It’s important to know the need of medicines and therapies in order to help depressed people. Religious practices also help to weaken this disease. Many people have overcome this situation after several losses (material and/or loved ones) when participating on worships, masses, meetings, etc., activities linked to their religion, and they have had their normal life back.

I’m talking about depression, but therapies, medicines (and here it’s possible to include psychiatry) and religious practices may help people to recover from several emotional troubles, because these actions also interfere on brain working.

See that emotional troubles, from softer to most severe ones, may have a great impact on people’s lives: the depressed person doesn’t work, doesn’t talk with, and people who live around him/her may feel the negative impact on their lives. As I mentioned, the treatment performs a new connection with society, a reconnection from improvements from inner states of brain, consequently, improving person’s macro behavior or, once more, behavior.

This is the neuro-reconnection I’m talking about.

Neuro-reconnection in nine steps

01. Feelings, emotion and all our rationality were part of evolution for perpetuation of mankind on Earth;

02.  Belief and faith are feelings; so, they also were part of evolution;

03. Each religion and, so, all beliefs are relative, not absolute. It’s the religious relativism;

04. We, mankind, always create different religious values from each other in time and space due to religious relativism. These values were and are created by human capacity of imagination and there’s no supernatural factor or existence in the universe. They are not linked to something real, true, but have power when are evoked;

05 - Believing and faith are absolute in human, i.e., we grow with these skills, and we will use them depending on our belief, for which we are submitted to learn since our childhood. A few people change their faith, and, maybe, their religion, during their life;

06. Religious practices and its best values lighten negative emotional feelings due to existential questions and/or several disturbances which affect our psychological well-being;

07. On the other hand, meditation and therapies also serve for what was purposed in previous item;

08. Meditation, therapies and religious practices change brain regions functionality and/or structures, and such degree may vary from people to people, in their life quality;

09. I name neuro-reconnection every single psychic improvement; it's the reconnection with world: family, work, social life.

Neuro-reconnection

Resume

A person can withdraw from his social life, love relationships and work due to emotional
problems. Depression is a common example of these problems.
Psychiatry, therapies, meditations and even religious practices and / or a set of them
can solve this problem. These four practices promote neuroplasticity, that is,
alterations or neuronal functioning, provide the formation of new axons and dendrites
or alter the configuration of neural circuits.
The person heals, returns to his normal, social, emotional and work life. It is related
to your world of emotional problems due to neuroplasticity.
I gave this a name: neuro-reconnection.
Neuron neuro, neuroplasticity, neural network and religion of religion itself. The cure
comes from minor adjustments to the neural tissue.

A continuous and/or intense practice of therapies (including psychotherapy) and/or meditation and/or psychiatry may lead to better psychical conditions of people. Suitable behavior is understood by physical conditions, a greater understanding of themselves and/or own troubles, a suitable positioning before life, relief of symptoms of anxiety, distress, sleeplessness, depression, etc.

But the religious practice can also improve quality of people’s life. Praying, masses, cults, etc., compose this set of activities which may be influenced by a soul or a spirit.

Psychotherapy is a way for treatment of disturbs and mental disorders and is made with interaction between a professional and a patient, where, by talk, patient knows better his/her troubles, and, hence, learn how to solve them. At this interaction, patient also learns how to adapt and behave better in social environment where he/she lives, improving own quality of life and emotional intelligence as a whole. With long-term effect, new skills and expertise are required in terms of personality, improvement of self-esteem, a more effective positioning before life.

In 2005, Sara Lazar, by Massachusetts General Hospital, showed by magnetic resonance images that meditation increases cerebral prefrontal cortex thickness – region associated to planning of complex cognitive behaviors. Right insula thickness – linked to body sensations and to emotions – also showed be more thickly in RR practioners related to control group. It was the first evidence that meditation is associated to changes at brain infrastructure.

So, doesn’t religious practice also lead brain to the same path, changing structures and/or working of specific cerebral areas, or in set, affecting, part of it or as a whole, people’s behavior and/or personality?

In my opinion, I think so, but an analysis of how brain works before and after continuous and intense practice, with devices similar to CT by single-photon emission (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) or magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is required.

I don’t know whether this type of experience has ever been performed at any moment but I propose a new term, Neuro-reconnection, which is the result, the effect of one or several metal practices (together with physics, if required), aiming a better psychic or emotional condition, and, consequently, an improvement of quality of people's life. If you notice, this name comes from neuroscience, neuron, neurotransmitters, and reconnect, adapt for a better life as a whole.

Neuro-reconnection is a term which comprehends all mental effort diversities, mixing with our rationality, emotions and feelings, to improve our behavior from structural and functional changes of cerebral areas. The neuroplasticity.

Neuroscience has achieved so many advances I can tell something like this. I’m neither neuroscientist nor psychologist, I’m physicist, but I study several science branches and I wrote several articles about these subjects, related below, and others not yet translated:
